Congratulations to Nicky McArthur MNZM. We are absolutely delighted to congratulate Nicky on being recognised in the 2026 King’s Honours List, where she has been awarded Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit (MNZM) for her outstanding services to conservation and the community.
As Patron of the Kaikōura Dark Sky Trust, Nicky has played a pivotal role in Kaikōura’s dark sky journey by championing efforts to reduce light pollution and protect the natural darkness of the recently awarded Kaikōura International Dark Sky Sanctuary. These efforts are not only about preserving our night skies; they are critical for protecting wildlife and supporting healthy ecosystems.
One of the most significant beneficiaries of reduced light pollution is the endangered Hutton’s shearwater / tītī. Kaikōura is the only place in the world where they breed and Nicky’s property at Puhi Peaks is home to one of just two remaining breeding colonies, making her role in their protection profoundly important.
Reducing artificial light at night is vital for the safe return of tītī to their breeding grounds and for fledglings on their maiden voyage to sea. It also brings wider benefits for coastal environments, native species, and the Kaikōura community.
Through years of conservation, advocacy, and leadership, Nicky is making a lasting impact on our natural environment.
Congratulations Nicky
