A short survey to support Kaikōura’s dark sky future
In September 2024, Kaikōura was officially designated an International Dark Sky Sanctuary, recognising the exceptional quality of our skies and the huge amount of work our community has put into protecting them.
But the journey doesn’t stop there.
Completing this quick survey helps us understand what our community values, what’s working, and what could be improved so we can better support lighting choices, education, funding, and long-term planning across the district.
It’s anonymous, and open to everyone whether this is your full-time home, you own a business or visit Kaikōura regularly. We’d love to hear from you.

A Quick Footnote About the Sanctuary Boundary
While most of the Kaikōura district sits within the Sanctuary, around 2% of the district is outside the official boundary and this includes areas where many people live, work, and move around every day.
That means this work is not only about protecting the darkest skies in the district, but also about supporting good lighting and better night-time environments in the places people call home, including our town and residential areas.
