We’re thrilled that Nicky McArthur, founder of the Kaikoura Dark Sky movement and long-time local conservation champion, has been honored with the 2025 Bright Star Award by The Royal Astronomical Society at their annual conference in May.
This prestigious award recognises Nicky’s efforts to protect our locally endangered Hutton’s shearwater (tītī)—a taonga species deeply impacted by light pollution.
Through Nicky’s advocacy, she has helped raise awareness about the crucial link between artificial light and seabird survival, driving meaningful change for both wildlife and the natural darkness of our skies.
