We are absolutely delighted to share that our very own Larry Field has been awarded the 2025 DarkSky International Dr Arthur Hoag & William T. Robinson Award — one of the organisation’s highest global honours.
Each year, DarkSky International recognises and celebrates the incredible achievements of individuals, groups, and communities who are committed to our mission of preserving nighttime environments around the world. Their hard work and dedication inform global communities about the negative impacts of light pollution, supports and strengthens our network of advocates, and inspires us all to keep up the fight to reverse the growing trends of light pollution and save the natural night.

Larry’s Contribution to Kaikōura and Beyond
Since 2020, Larry has:
Shared his knowledge and passion through public talks, stargazing events and exhibitions inspiring the community to enjoy as well as preserve Kaikōura’s night skies.
Led our comprehensive sky brightness measurement programme across the district, laying the groundwork for Kaikōura’s successful Dark Sky Sanctuary application.
Trained volunteers to continue the night sky monitoring work.
Coordinated lighting improvement projects with councils, developers, and NZ Transport Agency teams ensuring new LED installations meet Dark Sky standards while protecting wildlife such as the endangered Hutton’s shearwater.
Designed and driven the installation of astrophotography equipment at the Kaikoura Lookout
Supported the creation of the Trust website with self-guided stargazing information, assisted with the creation of many educational lighting posters and displays.

A Well Deserved Honour
This award recognises Larry’s hard work, dedication and being a key force behind the Trust since the very beginning, combining science, advocacy, and community engagement to protect and celebrate the night sky.
“Larry’s passion for our night skies has inspired so many in our community to look up and care about the world above us. His work quietly and steadily built the foundations for Kaikōura’s Dark Sky Sanctuary, and this award recognises the countless hours he’s devoted to science, education, and light-pollution advocacy. We couldn’t be prouder.” Lisa Bond, Chair, Kaikōura Dark Sky Trust
On behalf of the Kaikōura Dark Sky Trust and the wider community — our heart felt congratulations, Larry.
