Matariki Train Celebration Shines Bright at Kaikōura Museum

Just after 5pm on Saturday 21st June, the Kaikōura Train Station came alive as the first-ever Great Journeys NZ Matariki Rail Experience pulled in from Ōtautahi Christchurch. On board were 88 eager guests, all set for an evening of celestial wonder—though the stars had other plans.

Unfortunately, thick cloud cover meant the original stargazing event on the lawns of Fyffe House had to be called off. But the magic of Matariki was very much alive, thanks to the quick efforts of the Kaikōura Museum team and members of the Kaikōura Dark Sky Trust, who transformed the museum into an atmospheric alternative venue.

The foyer lights were dimmed, and carefully placed red lanterns and decorations helped set the scene for a more intimate experience. Guests were welcomed with a karakia by Te Awhina Rangimarie Arahanga, before exploring the museum’s exhibits, telescope displays, astrophotography slideshow, and a virtual reality experience of the night sky.

Lisa Bond, Chair of the Kaikōura Dark Sky Trust, said she was really pleased with how the evening unfolded. “Guests travel from as far as Dunedin and even Hamilton just for this rail experience. The feedback has been incredibly positive, and Great Journeys NZ have already indicated they’d love to return next year.”

Lisa also expressed deep gratitude to Stephanie Lange, Manager of Kaikōura Museum, for so graciously accommodating the group on short notice. “Even without a clear night sky, the evening captured the heart of Matariki—bringing people together in celebration and connection.”
