All ages welcome
“This is a chance for locals to ask questions about our dark sky journey so far, hear about the exciting things happening right now, and learn how they can get involved,” says Lisa Bond, Chair of the Kaikōura Dark Sky Trust. “Protecting our night skies isn’t just about astronomy—it’s about supporting biodiversity, enhancing community wellbeing, and creating meaningful, sustainable tourism opportunities for Kaikōura.”

Fun things to during the evening:
Try telescope viewing & astrophotography (weather permitting)
🛰️ Explore the stars in Virtual Reality using the Stellarium night sky app—an immersive experience for all ages
Kids’ activity zone with lots of new and fun hands-on activities
Meet local dark sky advocates, experts & learn about what they do for our night skies
Learn how protecting the night sky benefits nature, our community, and local business
There are no speeches or formalities—just good people, inspiring ideas, and a beautiful view of the stars (if the skies allow!).
“Kaikōura has some of the most beautiful skies in the world, and this evening is about celebrating all things relevant to our night sky—through connection, curiosity, and learning,” says Bradley McConville, owner of Moana Skies and coordinator of the event.
Any donations from the evening go toward the Kaikōura Dark Sky Trust’s work in conservation, education, and community outreach.
